ADOPTING A CHILD THROUGH THE MENDING HEARTS PROGRAM
Prospective adoptive families interested in adopting a child through the KAS Mending Hearts Program may submit an approved home study and family profile to KAS at no charge. Interested families are advised that maintaining an approved home study can assist greatly in helping an alternative placement occur as quickly as possible.
Families who seem to be a potential match for a child entering the Mending Hearts Program will be notified and advised of the child's particular situation, medical and social history, personality characteristics and any identified problems or challenges. This will be done in a non-identifying way. Should the prospective family remain interested in the situation they will be presented to the original adoptive family should this family desire to have a part in choosing the alternative family. Should more than one possibility be identified for a child, KAS staff will choose which family is the best fit for the child in consideration of the child's best interests.
If KAS does not have an interested family at the time that a child enters the Mending Hearts Program, KAS staff will work diligently to recruit a family.
Upon identification of a family, KAS will work with both the original adoptive family and the alternative placement family to satisfy all legal requirements. KAS will also provide support services to the new adoptive family to help ease the transition of the child and the family.
Families adopting through the Mending Hearts Program are responsible for the expense of their home study, Agency Placement Fees, legal fees for their finalization and fees for their travel if required.
